Farewell circumambulation
The farewell circumambulation (Tawaf al- wada') is obligatory to a pilgrim who wants to leave the holy Makkah for his homeland. Since it is a separate Ibadha, the intention (Niyya) is required for the validity of this Tawaf.

The Farewell Tawaf should be performed after completing the rituals of Hajj and Umrah and a pilgrim should immediately leave the holy Makkah after performing it. If he remains in holy Makkah without an acceptable excuse or for something other than the procedures of departure, such as buying some necessities, paying back a debt, visiting a friend or a sick person, and the like, then he is required to perform Tawaf again.
Some pilgrims leave Mina on 12th or 13th of Dhul-Hijjah to perform Farewell Tawaf around the Ka`bah and then return back to Mina to stone (as part of the Hajj rituals) and then leave for home. Hence stoning would be the last activity that the pilgrims do prior to departing the Sacred Land, not Tawaf. This is a common mistake. No doubt, Farewell Tawaf should be the last ritual to be performed by pilgrims before leaving.
It is disobedience to Allah to leave without the farewell circumambulation and one must return to holy Makkah to perform it if one is still within a distance of 132 km (2 Marhalas). If one is farther than this distance, then one is not required to return. However, such a person is required to offer the compensation, which is slaughtering a sacrificial goat having the qualities specified for Ud-hiyya provided that the cost is affordable to him. If the cost is not affordable, then he should fast three days immediately and consecutively after reaching his home town and seven days at his convenience. Moreover, woman in menstrual or postnatal period is exempted from performing Farewell Tawaf if she had performed Tawaf al-Ifadah.
The integrals and conditions of the farewell circumambulation are the same as obligatory circumambulation (Tawaf Al-Ifadah).
The farewell circumambulation is an obligatory activity for only those intending to perform Hajj or Umrah and leaving the Holy Makkah with an intention to stay his home town whether it is within 132 km or not. It is also recommended for those leaving the sacred place to a place within 132 km intending to return (Al iedhah by Imam Nawawi (R). The farewell circumambulation is not an obligatory activity for those entering the Holy Makkah only for trading, job or to visit their relatives.
