Uthman (R) was one of the prominent persons who embraced Islam in the beginning. As he believed in Islam his uncle, Hakam punished him severely. When he reached that Uthman must not be brought back he relived him from punishment. Uthman was the first who made hijra to Abyssinia with family. He married two daughters of prophet. He brought Ummu Kulthum in to his life after the death of his first wife Ruqayya. So he was called 'Dunnoorain'.(the owner of two lights) He was known for his humility and charity. He fought with prophet in all wars except Badr. At the time of Badr, prophet asked him to look after his unhealthy wife Ruqayya.
When Umer (R) was in a critical stage after he was stabbed, he nominated a six member committee and asked them to elect one of them as the next caliph. Uthman bin Affan, Ali bin Abi thalib, Abdurrahman bin Auf, Sa'd bn Abee Vaquas, Thalhath bn Ubaidillah and Zubair bn Avvam were the six members. They elected Uthman bin Affan (R) as the next caliph.
Important tasks
1. He fought and suppressed those countries which broke mutual agreements and started revolutions.
2. Persian Empire was brought completely under Muslim control.
3. under the leader ship of Muaviya Islamic militia conquered Cyprus which was under Rome .
4. Ships were built and started naval war.
5. North African countries from Tripolia to Tanja were conquered by the army under Abdullah bin Sa'd (R)
6. Copies of holy Qur'an were prepared and sent them to Islamic town along with the tutors.
7. When 'Mahals' were widened with the increased population a 'second bank' was brought in to practice for the Jumua prayer.
Uthman was a peace lover, just and benevolent. But some of his political policies were not acceptable to all. In addition to this Abdullah bin Sa'd a Jew in disguise of Muslim spread rumors on Uthman(R). Some people misunderstood and started troubles. They organized from Kufa, Basara and Misr and came to holy Madina. They cordoned the house of Uthman (R) and murdered him. The Messenger of Allah (PBH) had prophesied that Uthman would be a martyr. |
