Lailathul Bara’th: What do the scholars say?

Imam Shafi (R) in his famous kithab ‘Umm’ (1/204) says: the supplications would be given answer on the particular five nights i.e. the nights Friday, Eid Al-Adha, Eidul Fithr, the first day of Rajab and the fifteenth day of Sha’ban.
Allama Ibnu Hajar (R) Says: Definitely, this night (Lailathul Bara’th) has special nobility. That is why; Imam Shafi (R) stated that this night is more suitable for getting answer to the supplications. With assuring and considering the greatness of this night, he has a difference of opinion in the matter of special Prayers (Namaz) on it. He opinioned it is an evil custom. (Fatha Al- Kubra 2/80). About these Prayers, Imam Gazzali (R) explains in his ‘Ihyau Uloomudheen’: You perform hundred raka’ths on this night. In each raka’th, recite Suara ‘Ikhlas’ eleven times after the Sura ‘Fathiha’. It is also acceptable to perform only ten raka’ths and to recite ‘Ikhlas’ hundred times in each rak’ath (Ihya 1/209).
Zainul Iraqi (R) commented in his ‘Thakhreej Al-Ihya’( Page 210): the Hadith about this prayer is the unacceptable one. But some scholars opinioned that this Hadith has other sands (chain of narrations) and if we examine each one, it become so strengthened that being accepted for virtuous deeds.
There are a lot of Hadiths narrated by different chains of narrations for making the night of Sha’ban fifteen flourished by good deeds (Ithhafu ssadath 3/325).
So we could understand from above mentioned matters that the scholars have unanimous opinion in the nobility of Lailathul Bara’th and the difference of opinion is only in the number of Rakaths of the special Prayer (Namaz) performed on that night. In nutshell, we should have to understand the importance of increasing the virtuous deeds on this night and come forward to make the night alive with the doings.
